How Authentic Is It?

Is everything you see here exactly what a Roman soldier in first-century Judaea would have worn? Probably not, and that’s fine. We’re here to give the impression of Roman authority, not museum-perfect fidelity.

Part of the reason is evidence. Archaeologists have found Roman armor, helmets, weapons, clothing, and shoes, but nobody has dug up a complete soldier with a note listing everything he wore in Judaea on a given Tuesday. Sometimes we have solid evidence, sometimes only clues, and sometimes historians disagree about what the clues mean.

The rest is practical. We’re recreating ancient Judaea in the middle of a modern Midwest winter, with equipment we can actually find, make, modify, and afford, while still trying to avoid frostbite.

Are our Romans perfect? Nope. But that’s OK.
