A Scarf with a Job

A focale was a cloth worn around the neck, and for a Roman soldier it was more than a fashion choice. Armor had edges, straps, and metal fittings, and after a long day on the move, anything chafing your neck got old fast.

It gave a soft layer between the soldier and his armor, cutting the rubbing and making heavy gear more comfortable to wear. And when the armor came off, it was still a perfectly good scarf.

A simple fix for an ordinary problem, and a reminder that Roman soldiers weren’t only thinking about swords and battles. They also had to get through a long day without their kit driving them crazy.

Sometimes the most useful piece of military equipment is just a comfortable piece of cloth.
